China –the ‘good luck woman’

When after the ceremony, the bride is supposed to leave for the groom’s house; she is not sent alone but is accompanied by a woman who is the symbol of happy and healthy life- healthy children, surviving parents and in an ongoing happy marriage. This good luck woman accompanies the bride in her journey that she takes in the sedan chair while the woman holds an umbrella over her head to ward off all evil. Meanwhile, other relatives shower them with rice and beans.

India –the ‘Henna’

Otherwise and colloquially known as ‘Mehendi’, henna is applied a day or two before the ceremony on the bride’s hands.  It is meant to bring good luck and happy life to the couple. The entire female gentry involved in the weddings from both sides are invited to join the wedding custom and enjoy together. It is applied on both the hands and the feet of the bride to utilize the herbal and medicinal purposes of the henna plant as it is a cooling agent against the stress that the bride undergoes.

Lebanon- the ‘Zaffe’

The wedding ceremony in Lebanon is kick started by actually partying and celebrating the spirit of communion. Professional dancers and musicians are called and the families of the bride and groom shout at each other with the involvement of all the friends as well. It’s a start filled with adrenaline that paves the way to welcoming the couple at the bride’s house.

Cuba- the helping dance

It is a well-known fact that weddings are an expensive event that often ends in stressful times for the families. In Cuba, there a very helpful tradition that while the bride dances in the celebration of her own wedding, every man that dances along with her must pin some money to her gown to help out the couple to pay for the wedding.

Venezuela- the elopement

Post reception, the bride and groom are supposed to do the most wonderful thing that couples all over the world only dream of. They are traditionally supposed to elope right after the reception but here is the catch- no one should notice them and the guest that notices them gets blessed with good luck. When in Venezuela, you run legitimately!
